Description: Create a surfboard-shaped pūpū platter to display at your next meal! Inspired by the exhibition Heʻe Nalu: The Art and Legacy of Hawaiian Surfing, on view at Donkey Mill from August 17 - September 14, this class is designed for aspiring ceramic artists that want to see what the studio is all about. Students will use rolled slab, handbuilding and decorating techniques - no previous experience required. Better yet, you will get to take your piece home!**

Get inspired! We highly recommend arriving for this class at 5pm so you can view the exhibition in our main space before the start of your workshop.

**Due to the firing schedule and time restraints of a one day workshop, the instructor will apply clear glaze to the platters at a later date and pieces will be available for pickup 2-3 weeks after class. Arrangement can be made with the instructor to have your project mailed to you.

Level: Beginner, Ages 17+

Please note: Registration for this class will close on Sunday, September 1 at midnight.

The Mill will Provide:

  • 3 pounds of clay
  • Underglazes
  • Clear glaze
  • All tools needed

Students should bring:

  • Apron (or clothing that can get dirty)
  • Towel or cloth to wipe hands
  • Drawings or sketches for your platter design. There will be several designs to emulate in class if needed.
  • A pūpū and a beverage to enjoy during your class

About this Program: Creative Outlet: A Night of Art Making with Friends is a monthly opportunity for you to connect with local artists and tap into your own creativity while you pau hana with new and old friends. Bring a pūpū and beverage and learn something new like weaving a lei po’o or a lauhala bracelet, printmaking, painting, pinch pots and so much more!

As a place of convergence, the Mill serves as both a community and a physical place–celebrating the power of the arts, bringing people, ideas and perspectives together. We are proud to offer adult and youth programs that focus on awareness of one’s individuality in the contexts of family, community and the natural world. Our classes & workshops are designed to inspire creativity, foster connections, and provide enriching experiences for all participants. We invite you to join us in the studio.
