Description: This workshop is designed for people that have no experience in ceramics but have always felt that inner artist just waiting to be discovered. The best part: you don’t have to make something ugly – your pet will love it even if it’s gorgeous! The journey is more important than the destination in this one-of-a-kind workshop. Come have fun, learn something new, and maybe decide if this is a hobby you would like to pursue.

In this workshop, students will get a crash course in how to build and decorate a slab bowl. After a demo of how to use the slab roller, students will learn techniques for how to cut, score, and slip as well as how to add a coil to the seam of the bowl. Students will use underglazes and attach embellishments to their bowls all with expert guidance by your instructor.

**Due to the firing schedule and time restraints of a one day workshop, the instructor will apply clear glaze to the platters at a later date and pieces will be available for pickup 2-3 weeks after class. Arrangement can be made with the instructor to have your project mailed to you.

Level: Beginner, Ages 17+

Please note: Registration for this class will close on Sunday, November 3 at midnight.

The Mill will Provide:

  • 5 pounds of clay
  • Joining slip
  • Use of underglazes and glazes
  • All tools needed

Students should bring:

  • Apron (or clothing that can get dirty)
  • Towel or cloth to wipe hands
  • Drawings or sketches if you have an idea of what kind of bowl you want to make. Or feel free to wing it and decide after you get to class!
  • A pūpū and a beverage to enjoy during your class

About this Program: Creative Outlet: A Night of Art Making with Friends is a monthly opportunity for you to connect with local artists and tap into your own creativity while you pau hana with new and old friends. Bring a pūpū and beverage and learn something new like weaving a lei po’o or a lauhala bracelet, printmaking, painting, pinch pots and so much more!

As a place of convergence, the Mill serves as both a community and a physical place–celebrating the power of the arts, bringing people, ideas and perspectives together. We are proud to offer adult and youth programs that focus on awareness of one’s individuality in the contexts of family, community and the natural world. Our classes & workshops are designed to inspire creativity, foster connections, and provide enriching experiences for all participants. We invite you to join us in the studio.
