REGISTRATION OPENS ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5 AT 10:00AM HST.
Description: This four-day creative journey at the Spring Art Experience 2025, begins with a special community art project: Salmon Skin Pouches with Sonya Kelliher-Combs. Students will collaborate with ALOHA NŌ exhibiting artist, Sonya Kelliher-Combs to craft salmon skin or luxury cloth pouches, exploring the cultural and artistic significance of shared traditions and values while deepening their understanding of aloha.
Building on this experience, students will create self-portraits inspired by Hawaiian animals from the ʻāina (land), lani (sky), and kai (ocean). Using a watercolor crayon resist technique, keiki artists will bring their spirit animals to life in vibrant, expressive artwork. Each piece will feature a pocket (pouch) for messages of aloha, allowing students to reflect on kindness, gratitude, and connection.
Families and guests are invited to celebrate our young artists at a hōʻike on March 21, 2025, from 2:15 – 3:00 PM, where students will share their creative journeys and artwork.
About ALOHA NŌ: ALOHA NŌ is a call to understand Hawaiʻi as a place of rebirth, resilience, and resistance, embodying the spirit of aloha — a deep practice of compassion and care that fosters connection to the ʻāina (land), ocean, and each other. As Kanaka ʻŌiwi philosopher Dr. Manulani Aluli Meyer states, “Loving is the practice of an awake mind.”
Level: Ages 6-8
Please note: Registration for this program will close on Saturday, March 8 at midnight.
