Description: Weaving in the Marshall Islands is more than a craft—it is a living tradition woven into daily life and ancestral memory. For the Marshallese people, the coconut tree (ni) is a cornerstone of survival and creativity, providing everything from food and medicine to baskets, shelter, and tools for celebration and sustenance.
In this intermediate workshop, join the Wodde Jippel Group to deepen your connection to Marshallese culture through the art of palm frond weaving. Participants will work in pairs to create a Jeinai, a traditional floor mat made with care, intention, and collaboration.
Following the workshop, we will gather for a potluck lunch on the lawn. If you are able, please bring a homemade dish to share. The Mill will provide coconut rice, steamed fish, and a fresh salad to nourish our time together.
Palm fronds for this workshop are graciously donated by Ricci Bezona of Bezona Botanicals

About the Artist: The Wodde Jippel Group was established in February 2020 to empower Marshallese women and support their community as they adapt to new environments. The group assists with healthcare access, education, food sustainability, and community integration, while also preserving and sharing their cultural legacy. In collaboration with the Donkey Mill Art Center, Wodde Jippel promotes storytelling, art, and culture.
About Our Programs: As a place of convergence, the Mill serves as both a community and a physical place–celebrating the power of the arts, bringing people, ideas and perspectives together. We are proud to offer adult and youth programs that focus on awareness of one’s individuality in the contexts of family, community and the natural world. Our exhibitions provide a space to reflect, share perspectives and grow as a community. Our classes & workshops are designed to inspire creativity, foster connections, and provide enriching experiences for all participants. We invite you to join us in the studio.
