Description: With an emphasis on exploring form, color, and composition, this collaborative workshop will begin with students creating a set of collages they will then use to inform and inspire a woodblock print. Students will learn and use various collage techniques to create visual relationships through ink drawing, torn paper, brushstrokes and layering. Through the collage making process, students will be encouraged to play, embracing the freedom to make, destroy, and allow uncertainty and flow in their artwork.
Using the shapes and colors from their collage, students will then reinterpret the collage to create the layers for their mokuhanga print, the Japanese art of water-based woodblock printmaking. The workshop will cover the basics of the mokuhanga process including carving, registration, and printing. By layering, rotating, and even sharing blocks, students will experiment with this medium to make a new and unique print. The workshop will conclude with a casual sharing of completed works.
Level: Beginner/Intermediate, Ages 16+. Some printmaking experience is recommended but not required.
Please note: Registration for this class will close on Saturday, January 3 at midnight.

About the Artists: Lisa J. Maione is a designer, artist, and educator whose work investigates the screen as a material and mode of perception in relationships between images, reading, and memory. Her research-based work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and she runs a design practice focused on collaborative projects in the arts, architecture, publishing, and education. Lisa holds both an MFA and BFA in Graphic Design from RISD and a post-graduate certificate in Typeface Design from Type@Cooper NYC. She is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at the Kansas City Art Institute.
Micha Croft is an artist who grew up along the rocky coastline of Northern California, inspired by the mountains, ocean, and natural world around her. After earning her BA and teaching credential from UC San Diego, she continued to study Japanese brush painting, drawing, and printmaking. Her interest in mokuhanga led her to the Donkey Mill Art Center, where her work reflects “the poetry of the world around us—in the whisper of clouds, the flow of water, the silence of stones.”
About Our Programs: As a place of convergence, the Mill serves as both a community and a physical place–celebrating the power of the arts, bringing people, ideas and perspectives together. We are proud to offer adult and youth programs that focus on awareness of one’s individuality in the contexts of family, community and the natural world. Our exhibitions provide a space to reflect, share perspectives and grow as a community. Our classes & workshops are designed to inspire creativity, foster connections, and provide enriching experiences for all participants. We invite you to step into the studio.
