Description: Learn the traditions of lauhala with Kumu Heinani (Nanette) Bell and her weaving hui. In this introductory course, you’ll learn how to process lau and the foundations of ulana—the art of plaiting—by creating a bracelet, coaster, and fan.

Rooted deeply in Hawaiian culture, especially here in Hōlualoa, lauhala weaving historically used leaves from the hala tree to craft functional items such as hats and baskets for coffee pickers. Today, this practice continues as a celebrated art form across Hawai‘i, admired for its beauty, utility, and connection to place.

Level: Beginner, Ages 16+

Please note: Registration for this class will close on Saturday, March 28 at midnight.

Supply fee includes:

  • All lauhala sets for each weaving project.

Students should bring:

  • Water bottle, snack or lunch
  • Spray bottle
  • Optional: Your own lauhala tools if you have them.

About the Artist: Nanette Bell is a long-time resident of South Kona, where she has lived most of her life. A retired macadamia nut farmer and passionate naturalist, Nanette is also a skilled fiber artist. While she has explored fiber arts like batik and shibori, she has spent the past 30 years dedicated to the craft of lauhala weaving. Mentored by Master Weavers such as Ed Kaneko, Josephine Fergerstrom, and Arthur Murata, Nanette now teaches with their blessing, continuing to honor and share this living tradition.

About Our Programs: As a place of convergence, the Mill serves as both a community and a physical place–celebrating the power of the arts, bringing people, ideas and perspectives together. We are proud to offer adult and youth programs that focus on awareness of one’s individuality in the contexts of family, community and the natural world. Our exhibitions provide a space to reflect, share perspectives and grow as a community. Our classes & workshops are designed to inspire creativity, foster connections, and provide enriching experiences for all participants. We invite you to step into the studio.
