Description: Learn the fundamentals of metalsmithing while building confidence and skill through hands-on practice with nonferrous metal sheet and wire. In this foundational course, students will learn to identify common metal alloys and their characteristics, measure and transfer designs, and saw out intricate shapes using a jeweler’s saw.
We'll explore techniques for adding texture and dimension, including doming and forming, and cover cold connections such as wire and tube rivets to join elements securely. Students will also learn to apply natural patinas to “antique” their pieces and create custom jewelry findings to complete their wearable designs.
As the course progresses, we’ll introduce silver soldering and focus on combining multiple elements with a torch. Each week will highlight a different soldering method, with attention to proper tools, solder grades, clean-up, and troubleshooting. The class culminates in a final project that brings together multiple techniques, including soldering, polishing, and ring sizing.
No prior experience required—just curiosity and creativity!
