RESCHEDULED: Due to the storm on March 13 & 14, we've rescheduled this workshop for Saturday, April 11.

Description: In the early days, narrow woven bands played an important role in fastening clothing — long before elastic, zippers, or safety pins existed. Today, these bands are still appreciated for their beauty and versatility, often used as accessories, bookmarks, headbands, or as decorative accents on garments and home décor. Rigid heddles are wonderful tools for creating bands once you know how to use them.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to weave a beautiful narrow band using the backstrap method on a rigid heddle reed. Ann will guide you through the entire process — from designing your band and setting up your heddle to weaving your own functional and decorative bands.

Level:  Beginner, Ages 16+

Please note: Registration for this class will close on Thursday, April 9 at midnight.

Supply Fee Includes:

  • All supplies needed for the workshop

Students should bring:

  • A belt (for pants or skirt)
  • Notepad and pen
  • Lunch or snack, and something to drink
  • Optional: Additional supplies (reed & shuttle) will be available for purchase. Please bring $15 to purchase directly from Ann.

About the Artist: Ann Sun is a weaver based in Kealakekua, Island of Hawaiʻi. She has been weaving for 14 years. She learned how to weave when she moved to Hawaiʻi from New York. Weaving simply hooked her. Her passion for textiles has transitioned from collecting to making ever since. She loves to use the form of weaving to create something functional and beautiful. Lover of all natural fibers, Ann finds her inspiration from the mountain to the ocean. She splits her time between trees, her looms, and the sea.

About Our Programs: As a place of convergence, the Mill serves as both a community and a physical place–celebrating the power of the arts, bringing people, ideas and perspectives together. We are proud to offer adult and youth programs that focus on awareness of one’s individuality in the contexts of family, community and the natural world. Our exhibitions provide a space to reflect, share perspectives and grow as a community. Our classes & workshops are designed to inspire creativity, foster connections, and provide enriching experiences for all participants. We invite you to join us in the studio.
