Event Description: Ceramics of Hawaiʻi: The Donkey Mill invites you to a special presentation with Jake Boggs surveying the rich history of ceramic art and industry in the Hawaiian Islands. Discover a riveting history that spans palace intrigue in an island kingdom, the architecture of escaped convicts, colonial mineral speculators, and even a “battle of the bricks” in downtown Honolulu.

Event Details: This event is free and open to the public. If able, please bring a healthy dish to share and/or something to drink for a communal dinner. The artist talk will begin at 6:00pm.

About the Artist: Jake Boggs is a Hawai‘i-based artist, curator, and arts educator specializing in ceramics and contemporary craft practices. He earned his MFA from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and BFA from Eastern Kentucky University. Jake’s passion for ceramics has led him to explore clay traditions across cultures, weaving a tapestry of global influences into his work. His artwork has been exhibited widely across the United States, in Hawai‘i, and South Korea, earning multiple awards and honors.

As an educator, Jake has shared his expertise at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Hawai‘i Potters Guild, Parker School, and the Donkey Mill Art Center, where he served as Ceramics Studio Coordinator from 2019–2024. In 2023, he was a summer resident at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, one of the nation’s leading centers for ceramic innovation.

In addition to his studio practice, Jake has curated exhibitions such as Myths and Mortality, Gemz Avery: An Argosy, Phase Change: Porcelain in Flux, and F4MF: Re/Marks on Color. He serves on the Board of Hawai‘i Craftsmen and is a Visual Arts Consultant for the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Jake maintains an active and evolving studio practice at his home in Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i.

About Our Programs: As a place of convergence, the Mill serves as both a community and a physical place–celebrating the power of the arts, bringing people, ideas and perspectives together. We are proud to offer adult and youth programs that focus on awareness of one’s individuality in the contexts of family, community and the natural world. Our exhibitions provide a space to reflect, share perspectives and grow as a community. Our classes & workshops are designed to inspire creativity, foster connections, and provide enriching experiences for all participants. We invite you to join us in the studio.
