Description: Join us for a day of creativity and learning at the Young Architects Workshop! This one-day event is crafted for students in grades 6 through 12, offering them the chance to dive into the world of architectural design under the mentorship of local professional architects. Participants will tackle a design challenge that pushes them to think critically about key architectural elements, including light, sun protection, airflow, and environmental connections or protections.

During the workshop, students will participate in hands-on activities to construct a small shelter at a 1:12 scale. All necessary materials, such as drafting kits, self-healing cutting tools, glue, tape, and various structural supplies, will be provided. Participants are only required to bring their own snacks, lunch, and a drink. This is an incredible opportunity to unleash creativity and bring architectural ideas to life!

This program is made possible through the collaborative efforts of AIA Honolulu, Roth Kimura Architects, and the Donkey Mill Art Center.

Level: Beginner, Youth in Grades 6 - 12

Please note: Registration for this class will close on Monday, October 21 at midnight.

Materials Provided:

  • Drafting kits
  • Self-healing cutting tools
  • Glue and tape
  • Various structural materials

About Architecture Month: For 18 years, AIA Honolulu has celebrated Architecture Month with an exciting array of public events. This annual series features a dynamic mix of free and for-cost activities that underscore the transformative power of good design in making our communities better places to live, work, and play.

World Architecture Day is celebrated on the first Monday of October, coinciding with the UN's World Habitat Day. The International Union of Architects chose this day to encourage reflection on the state of our towns and cities and to promote the fundamental right to adequate shelter. It serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility for the future of human habitats.

About Our Programs: As a place of convergence, the Mill serves as both a community and a physical place–celebrating the power of the arts, bringing people, ideas and perspectives together. We are proud to offer adult and youth programs that focus on awareness of one’s individuality in the contexts of family, community and the natural world. Our classes & workshops are designed to inspire creativity, foster connections, and provide enriching experiences for all participants. We invite you to join us in the studio.
